Why are they getting so much attention? The case in and of itself isn't that compelling, other than the fact that the victims were fairly attractive and not drunk at the time of deaths. And, of course, they were quite wealthy. Probably, someone either paid to have so much attention brought to the case, or else proponents of the death penalty are cynically twisting the murder to meet their political ends.

Sasha and Masha liked to buy each other presents.

MK spends most of the article, which was quite long by their standards, talking about what wonderful people the betrothed were. After meeting several months ago in a McDonald's (MK is explicit that neither were the type to pick up strangers in fast food chains, but this was LOVE), the pair proved their worth as human beings by... buying each other lots of presents! Certainly that is an adequate judge of moral fortitude. We learn though interviews with their friends and family that the lovers were simply drowning in a sea of passion and celebrated each month on the 21st, that fateful day they met at McD's.

We don't know much else about the pair, other than Masha was in her fifth year studying law at MGU and Sasha was in his fourth in a law program at some oil and gas institute. We also know that Sasha drove a Lexus and had plans on buying his way out of examinations that were scheduled for mid-January. He could do that because he was more or less guaranteed employment from his grandfather, who holds a powerful position at one of Russia's largest energy companies, the name of which MK forgets to mention.

A couple of days before New Year's, Sasha picked up Masha around 11 in the evening to take her out to some caf?. Sasha, who was two meters tall, was wearing a shirt he had borrowed from his friend Dima that didn't quite fit him. We don't really know what that has to do with anything, but Dima was the last person to see him.

Around the same time, Lena, one of Masha's friends, received a call from Masha, inviting her out to a bar (although MK tells us that Masha was not the kind of girl who went out to bars before she met Sasha). Lena declined, and only the killers know what happened next.

The militsia theorizes that Sasha had wanted to conclude the arrangements for buying his test scores (MK in no way thinks this reflects badly on his personality) and to that end organized a meeting with someone claiming to be the son of a professor that could help him. However, according to this scenario, the son had no such plans, and wanted instead to jack Sasha and steal his car.

The only issue with that version is that Sasha's car was found right next to the two bodies. And Sasha had the keys in his pocket. That hardly seems a good plan of attack on the part of the assailants, if they were really only interested in the car.

More intriguing still is that Sasha and Masha were found just off of the MKAD, which is neither where they chose to spend most of their time nor particularly close to where they lived. Masha had told Lena that they were planning on going to a stylish club in the center of town. And, if Sasha had simply wanted to cheat, why would he have to drive out into the middle of nowhere late at night to do so? It would have been much easier to simply reach an agreement with his professor in the safety of the school's campus.

Obviously, something doesn't add up. There was no word if autopsies had been preformed. But it seems like this wasn't just a random killing, or even a murder for a car. Sasha probably was a much more complex person than the romantic MK lovingly described.
