Afghan Warfare Just Got Real
Our man in Afghanistan loses two friends By Joe Sailor Browse author
Page 2 of 2

The total number of coalition (United States) deaths gets broadcasted on CNN like it's the fucking Dow Jones Industrial Average. Being a deployed warrior, you learn to push those thoughts outside of your head. For the most part, at least in Afghanistan, these elements of warfare are abstract concepts and not tangible realities. For the most part. Anti coalition militia dropped a Chinese grenade on a US led foot patrol from a rooftop about two kilometers from our FOB a few weeks ago. The next night our FOB was targeted by a 107mm Chinese rocket. The rocket missed its target, sparing hundreds of lives. The next day we drove west to visit a French FOB. A member of the 82nd Airborne took a gunshot wound to both hands while he was operating the .50 cal machine gun. While he was already under the care of the 82nd medics, I took the liberty of hitting him with another 10mg auto-injector of morphine, just for good measure. I've been getting my nose in it, there's no doubt about that, but things still felt a bit abstract. It wasn't real for me yet.

Two of my friends were killed in an ambush last month. They were driving on one of the most dangerous roads in fucking world, with high ground on all sides, and they were ambushed with rockets and automatic machine gun fire. One was killed by a headshot, and the other was shot above his body armor, which may suggest that there were Chechen snipers in those hills, because Taliban fighters couldn't hit the wide side of a barn with a mortar tube.

It's real for me now. My friends are dead. I want to hear the song about the soldiers in Afghanistan, and I want someone to sing it to me.
