Kasparov Wows American Audience!
Alexander Zaitchik ( Email ) on October 23, 2007
Last week Gary Kasparov appeared on Real Time With Bill Maher. The Other Russia leader was in New York touring with his new book, How Life Imitates Chess, but didn't talk about the king of games on the show. Maher kept the interview focused on Putin and the "Russian soul," which the host suggested, "craves a strong leader."

Kasparov slapped this comment down as he did Maher's needling question about Putin's high approval ratings. After both slappings, Maher didn't parry or hold his ground at all. He meekly accepted his place and conceded, "checkmate."

But more interesting than Maher's meekness was the response to Kasparov by Chris Matthews, host of the nightly MSNBC orgy of beltway blowhards, Hardball. Kasparov's short comments about democracy and the role oil prices play in Russian politics were nothing extraordinary, yet they had Matthews absolutely beside himself in spastic awe.

As Kasparov talked about the relationship between Putin's power, oil prices, and instability in the Middle East, Matthews is heard off-camera exclaiming, "Jesus!"

After the interview, the shameless Matthews launched into one of his famous gushes. "Do you ever think that they're playing chess and we're playing checkers? Our guys—our guys never get to that level of sophistication! They talk down to us!"

"And he has to fight—just to run!"  Maher agrees.

"And he's thinking in Russian and talking to us in a foreign language!" exclaims Matthews. "Imagine one of our guys talkin' in a foreign language at that level of sophistication!"

"Not on your show," quips Maher. Checkmate.

It's possible that American cable news really is such a wasteland of idiocy that a little honest talk about oil politics sends an MSNBC host into a tizzy. Or maybe Kasparov is just the latest in a long line of Matthews' man crushes.
