Watching Big Fish--which has fine casting with Albert Finney, Steve Buscemi and Belen Conham Harter, although a mistake was made with casting Ethan Hawke and the facelift-mangled Jessica Lange--I realized why I parted ways with Burton.

His goth gig didn't get stale, it got wholesome. Wholesome goth just isn't interesting.

Beetlejuice was not only goth and brave, it was mean. It was full of venom and vengeance against corporate scum, yuppies, families, ambition, pretentious art fags, life itself, and even against alienated goth kids. It was wild and mean and fun and you felt for those 90 minutes that the scum might pay. And that was important during the awful cultural drought of the Reagan years.

I guess what happened was that Tim Burton started getting laid. He lost touch with his driving pain. He was no longer a nerd, no longer angry, but he knew where his bread was buttered: with goth decorations.

I don't begrudge him, even as hokey as Big Fish was. It's so, you know, magical. And pro-family. Eesh. He even has those Spielberg chimes throughout the movie that are supposed to make you get shivers and have your kids grow wide-eyed and go "wow!" Yup, it's that magical.

I walked out of this movie at the 55-minute mark. Not angry, but not foolish enough to waste another 55 minutes.

Two cubes of tofu. This movie is just so damn healthy.
