Dark shit, but at some point you realize that this is just the Real Thing. It's like dark matter -- denial keeps us from seeing 95% of what's in front of our faces.

Denial is outdoors as well, a wonderful communal/national exercise. Denial binds people together. It's happening here in Russia, where under Putin more and more middle-class Russians are starting to buy into this notion of Russia-as-Norway, just another normal civilized European country. It happened in America under Reagan, and it's happening now under Bush. The Iraq War, and Americans' reactions to what they were told in the leadup and aftermath, the massive gap between the image people want to believe about their president and the awful reality (because both are a direct reflection of the citizens projecting that image), is no less grotesque than the child molesting Jewish family from Long Island. The only difference is that in America, flat reality is rarely, all too rarely, filmed for the permanent record.

Three tweezed-open eyes. You MUST watch this movie.

This new romantic comedy reunites the successful screenwriter of Four Weddings and a Funeral (who directs) with 4WF's star Hugh Grant for this joyful, delectable romantic comedy. I know it's silly and shallow of me to say this, but I just couldn't resist the love, sorrow and passion packed into every minute of this film.

Here are just some of the notes and adjectives that I wrote down while watching Love Already, descriptions which only begin to describe my feelings: Igniting laughter, wreaking havoc, breaking hearts, daring commitments, forcing choices, catapulting spirits, forging inroads, creating risks -- ecstatic, exciting, unexpected, unwelcome, inconvenient, inexplicable, inelegant, unequalled.

The movie's various love plots surprise and tease. From Hugh Grant, playing the Prime Minister, falling instantly in love with his refreshingly real secretary, to one of my favorites, Liam Neeson, playing a widowed stepfather trying to connect with a son he barely knows, to the ever-estimable Emma Thompson, who plays a beautiful middle-aged English woman trapped in elephant hide, this movie really touches every facet of the human heart.

Three spoonings. Watching this just made me want to spoon for hours with my English-speaking Russian girlfriend. So will you!
