Beauty and the Beast: Ex-MOLOKO frontwoman ROISIN MURPHY plays Ikra October 27 with Swedish DJ FREDDIE KRUGER
Probably the most interesting Halloween party is at Ikra, where MOLOKO singer ROISIN MURPHY (October 27, Ikra, 22:00) will be performing with Swedish DJ FREDDIE KRUGER, for the club's "Beauty and the Beast" party. Rockers and dancers will meet here.
The other Halloween-y thing I thought I'd mention is the GROWLING MAD SCIENTISTS (October 27, B1, 22:00). The duo formed in the 90s in Amsterdam when they were teenagers, too young to get past the door under normal circumstances. After starting out with the dominant gabber music, the duo spent some time in Goa, where their minds were apparently just blown, and ever since they've been making wicked trance music.
If you want to avoid Halloween, not a problem. EVERYTHING IS MADE IN CHINA (October 27, 16 Tons 23:00) -- Moscow's hottest post-rock band that isn't SILENCE KIT -- is having its record release party. Don't hold me responsible, though, if some of the dyevs showing up for the disco are dressed in costume, though.
Naughty tweens: TEENAGE BAD GIRL electro-fies Mio on October 27
It's also possible that you'll see people all costumed up for TEENAGE BAD GIRL (October 27, Mio, 23:00). Not because the funky-as-hell Parisian duo would encourage it, but just because Moscow is full of dorks who like to dress up. Anyway, if you feel like braving feis kontrol, this electro act combines DAFT PUNK and APHEX TWIN with a dash of THE STOOGES.
On the actual date of Halloween, the only thing in town to do is to see UNKLE (October 31, B1 Maximum, 19:00). Sadly, they are headlining the Russian Alternative Music Prize festival, which means that not only will Unkle have to share the stage with craptacular Russian bands like JANE AIR, AGATA KRISTI, and ARIYA, but they'll probably only get to play a handful of songs.
The latest band from the incestuous Canadian indie music scene to visit Moscow is HANDSOME FURS (November 1, Ikra, 21:00). The Furs are composed of WOLF PARADE member DAN BOECKNER and his fiance ALEXEI PERRY, and mix vocals, guitars and drum machines for a sound that is at once sparse and repetitive, while simultaneously loud and earnest. This should be one of the fortnight's high points.
The final event this fortnight is punk/hardcore mini-fest RAZOR FEST (November 4, Tochka, 19:00). The fest features Holland's BORN FROM PAIN, the UK's HONOUR AMONG THIEVES, Bulgaria's LAST HOPE, and locals FOURTH DIMENSION, RISE AS ONE and TENT. Get your mosh on.
